Taxes are one of life's great certainties, unless it's Tennessee's annual state-wide sales tax holiday.
Tennessee's tax holiday is a glorious three-day period (held annually on the first weekend in August) where our 9.25 percent state sales tax isn't applied to a bunch of practical, back-to-school type items.
Let's go over the rules of what you can (and can't) get tax-free:
– Clothing: All clothing items that are $100 or less are tax-free. This includes socks, underwear, hats and shoes, but not accessories like jewelry or bags.
– School and art supplies: Go crazy at the Office Depot, because all basic school supplies (paper, pens, markers, notebooks, etc.) and art supplies are tax-exempt.
– Computers: Computers and tablets that cost less than $1500 are tax-free. However, you still have to pay taxes on printers, computer parts, e-readers and video game consoles.
This year's holiday starts at 12:01 a.m. this Friday, August 7, and ends on Sunday, August 9, at 11:59 p.m. If you have questions about exactly what is exempt, go here.
Some stores have extended their hours, so you may want to call before you shop. If you want to beat the crowds, I recommend going during the day on Friday or later on Sunday. (Ed. Note: This is an updated post from last year.)
