Hernando Ice Cream Adventure Pt. 2: Velvet Cream “The Dip”

Today is National Ice Cream Day! In honor of this esteemed occasion, I wanted to tell you about my Hernando ice cream adventure this past week.

Last week, I asked readers for their favorite Mid-South places to get ice cream (you can read all about what we came up with here). Several of you recommended two places in Hernando, so I had to check them out for myself.

I grabbed two of my colleagues, Bob and Caroline, and we headed down I-55 to Hernando, Mississippi to do a double dip into this town's ice cream offerings. Here is a post about our second stop. To read about our first stop, Area 51 Ice Cream, click here.

Velvet Cream Exterior

The legendary Velvet Cream has been a staple in Hernando since 1947 – which, sorry folks, is about 27 years before Jerry's opened in Memphis. Also: don't call it Velvet Cream; locals call this place The Dip due to the dip in the parking lot asphalt.

The Dip is a sno cone stand on steroids. Like Jerry's, they also serve burgers and an assortment of fried delicacies and offer a multitude of sno-cone flavors. Unlike Jerry's, their food menu is huge, they have a multitude of ice cream flavors and toppings, and decoding the menu is like something out of the Memphis Escape Room.

Sorry for the glare. I wanted to show you how the menu is set up.

Velvet Cream Cup Sizes
What's bigger than the Route 44? The I-55 of course.

The Dip's menu takes up the entire store front and consists of color-coded shapes with a key for which flavors and styles of cold treat are available in what format, i.e., shakes, sno cones, concretes, slushes, smoothies, freezes, etc.

Bob picked the Fluffernutter concrete, I chose a chocolate shake with Thin Mints, and Caroline decided on a Tahitian Medicine Man sno cone with ice cream. Our order was up in just a couple of minutes. Most people got their treats to-go (there is also a drive-thru) but we hung around in front of the store to enjoy ours.

The Fluffernutter concrete is a peanut butter dream come true. If you're the type of person who eats peanut butter out of the jar and ice cream out of the carton (I've been guilty of both behaviors), this is like combining both of those things and adding an extra dose of creamy sweetness from the marshmallow. Bob gave it a solid A and I'd highly recommend it. P.S. – a concrete is like a thick milkshake made with frozen custard instead of ice cream.

My chocolate shake with Thin Mints (yes, real Girl Scout cookies) is one of the best milkshakes I've had. Note that at Velvet Cream, you can get mix-ins in the form of cookies, cakes, pie, candy, and cereal. That's right, I said cereal or pie in your ice cream.

Gotta love the hand-drawn signs.

Baby, we got it.

Caroline's Tahitian Medicine Man sno cone tasted like the beach in a very good way. It was lime and coconut syrups mixed on shaved ice, plus vanilla soft-serve on top. It's hard to pick a favorite out of what we ordered (especially since they were all so different) but I get the feeling you can't really go wrong at Velvet Cream.

Velvet Cream aka The Dip is open Sunday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on Fridays and Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. They have parking out front, a drive-thru, tons of cold treats and hot eats, plus t-shirts and such for sale.
