Charles Boyd's Blogger: 5 Things To Do In Memphis This Weekend: 7/17

Happy Friday, Memphis! Here are the five things you won't want to miss this weekend.

1. Motown the Musical, Orpheum Theatre, all weekend, prices vary, 13 and up
I went earlier to this show earlier this week and it was fun, fast-paced, and made me want to sing along. The cast is energetic and talented as it presents the story of Motown and stars like Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson, and more. If you like Motown or musicals at all, make it a point to see the show; it's only in town through the weekend.

2. Video Game Block Party, Brooks Museum, Saturday, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. free, all ages/kid-friendly
Bring the whole family for music, games, art-making, a screening of 1982's Tron, and Amurica photo booth. it's free to attend, but bring your appetite because there will be food trucks on hand. Starting at 5 p.m., there will be an All Access party with DJs, breakdancing, a gaming tournament. All Access is for folks 18 and up and admission is $10.

3. Paint Memphis, Chelsea Greenline, Saturday, all day, free to attend, all ages
From the Facebook event: "Paint Memphis is a one-day festival that will bring over 50 artists to Memphis to paint the flood wall adjacent to the proposed Chelsea Greenline. The wall starts at the Chelsea trailhead, at N. Evergreen and Chelsea and goes west for .3 miles, making it the biggest collaborative mural in Memphis." Show up on Saturday to help paint, see the artists at work, and eat at Stick 'Em and Say Cheese food trucks.

4. Time Warp Drive-In: Future Shock Fest, Summer Drive-In, Saturday, starts at 8:15 p.m., $10, 13 and up
Black Lodge Video and Malco Theatres present the Time Warp Drive In series, which continues this weekend with a "Future Shock Fest" dystopian movies including Escape from New York, Mad Max 2, Repo Man, and The Watrriors. Parents: look up individual movies to decide about kid-appropriateness. Go here to see the lineup for all nine Time Warp Drive In nights.

5. National Ice Cream Day, Sunday, all day, prices vary, all ages
This month is National Ice Cream Month and Sunday is the big day, so celebrate by eating at one of these local ice cream shops or attend the Botanic Garden's Sweet Treat Day to eat ice cream and pet a cow.

There's a ton of other things going on this weekend as well, including a Spillit Story Slam tonight, a Voices of the South birthday party and a comedy show at the P&H on Saturday, and lots of local farmer's markets.
