5 Things To Do In Memphis This Weekend: 5/29-5/31

Happy Friday, Memphis! It's a crazy busy weekend, with tons of options for fun in town. Here are the five things you won't want to miss.

1. Memphis Italian Festival, Marquette Park, May 28 – 30, all day, $10 – $15 / kids under 12 free, all ages
Celebrate Memphis' Italian community with food, games, a cooking contest and more at the Memphis Italian Festival. Similar to BBQ Fest, you have to have an inside connection or be a part of a cooking team in order to eat most of the food, so prepare accordingly. You can also play bocce ball and cornhole, hear live music, and purchase some food from vendors at Luigi's Cafe and Market. The Fest is open 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday; admission is $10 and $15 after 4 p.m. on Saturday. Go here for info on the free shuttle.

2. Brewery Revival, Tennessee Brewery (495 Tennessee St.), Thursday – Sunday, all ages/kid-friendly
This weekend at Brewery Revival is your last chance to enjoy the architecture, atmosphere, music, art, and food before the Brewery is shut down for renovations. It's open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and Sunday from noon to 9 p.m. Fresh Gulf Shrimp and Food Geek food trucks will be there Friday; Central BBQ and Stick 'Em will be there Saturday; Fuel Food Truck plus a crawfish boil will be there Sunday. As for live music, Buckles and Boots and American Fiction Unplugged play Saturday at 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. respectively, and Artistik Approach and The Memphis Dawls play at 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, respectively. Post your Tennessee Brewery (Revivial, Untapped, even before then) photos with hashtag #Brewery Memory to be included in the virtual time capsule. 

3. South Main Art Tour, South Main Arts District, Friday, 6 p.m.- 9 p.m., free, all ages/kid-friendly
It's time for the monthly South Main Art Tour (I'm just calling it that now, it's a more accurate name than "Trolley Night"). Shops and businesses will have open houses, free drinks and snacks, and live music. MEMshop celebrates the opening of three new shops at 488 – 500 S. Second Street: Makeda's Butter Cookies, OXN (a men's boutique), and gallery exhibition "Circuitous Succession". Note that the latter may not be appropriate for young children. Don't miss the Songwriter's Night at 550 S. Main. Brewery Revival will also have a film screening in the Atrium starting at 7 p.m. tonight, too.

4. FIRE Fun Day, Metal Museum (374 Metal Museum Drive), Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., free, all ages/kid-friendly
Spend the day at the Metal Museum for free on Saturday: see an iron pour, make your own cast iron tile or bowl, enjoy food trucks, a reception for the FIRE exhibition, and access to the grounds after-hours (for one of the best sunsets in town). There will be a cash bar and about twenty visiting artists to meet.

5. How-To Festival, Germantown Community Library (1925 Exeter Rd.), Saturday, 1 p.m. – 4 p.m., free, all ages
Head to Germantown for a chance to learn a ton of "how-tos" on Saturday. More than 30 presenters will offer classes and demos on everything from blacksmithing and beekeeping to crocheting and container gardening.

A couple of other ideas: The Humane Society's Mega-Adoptation is at 935 Farm Road from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, where several local shelter and rescue groups will bring their most adoptable furry friends (adopt don't shop!) The Belz Museum hosts a free showings of Slumdog Millionaire and Bride and Prejudice this weekend. Tonight is also the Miss Gay Tennessee Regional American competition at Evergreen Theatre.

As for live music, the Levitt Shell is in full-swing (free), Germantown School of Rock is at Minglewood tonight, the River Series at Harbor Town hosts Eric Lewis and Andy Ratliff, then Caleb Sweazy on Saturday ($5), and the Hi-Tone has Dead Soliders with Marcella and Her Lovers on Saturday ($10)…and that's just a sampling.
