365 Things to Do in Memphis #150: The FedEx St. Jude Classic

Grab your "Hush Y'all" sign – assignment #150 in the 365 Things to Do in Memphis is to go to the FedEx St. Jude Classic (and while you're there, eat a Pronto Pup.)

FedEx St. Jude Classic, Memphis, Tenn.

Some of the best players in golf come to Southwind every year for the week-long tournament, which is the longest-running event on the PGA Tour. The 2015 tournament starts next Monday, June 8, and goes through Sunday, June 14.

In 2015we have a great lineup: Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Webb Simpson, and defending champion Billy Horschel plan to play, among many others.

Before the tournament proper on Saturday, June 6, there's a Shrimp & Cocktails party that's a fundraiser for St. Jude.

The Classic starts with a Pro-Am tournaments on Monday and Wednesday that allow average Memphians to team up with professional golfers and celebrities (for a price). The PGA tournament game starts on Thursday and runs through Sunday afternoon.

Most importantly, though, the FedEx St. Jude Classic is a fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The tournament has generated more than $25 million dollars for the hospital since 1970.

Reminders of the cause are constant at Southwind. People who live along the course hang “We (heart) St. Jude! banners from their balconies. On Wednesday, St. Jude patients will serve as assistant caddies for the golfers at one of the holes.

Overall, the FedEx St. Jude classic is a low key good time. I recommend finding a shady spot (there are some shaded bleachers) and watching the pros play. Southwind is a friendly place, and the players have been known to joke with fans and sign autographs (especially during the Pro-Am). If you want to see the whole schedule, go here. If you have more questions, go here.

Pro tips:

1. Sunscreen is a must.
2. Sit at the 18th hole – that way, you can see everyone playing finish their game rather. Plus, there’s plenty of shady seating.
3. Leave your phone on silent or turn it off to be sure. Don't be that guy.
4. Get a Pronto Pup from the fanciest Pronto Pup dispensary ever. Regular ones are $3, and foot longs are $5.
